Breathing Problems

For Breathing Problems:
Introduction:
When you are short of breath, it's hard or uncomfortable for you to take in the oxygen your body needs.  You may feel as if you're not getting enough air.  Sometimes mild breathing problems are from a stuffy nose or hard exercise.  Some shortness of breath can also be a sign of a serious disease.  Many conditions can make you feel short of breath.  Lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema, or pneumonia cause breathing difficulties.  So can problems with bronchi, which are part of your airway system.  Heart disease can also make you feel breathless if your heart cannot pump enough blood to supply oxygen to your body.  Stress caused by anxiety can also make it hard for you to breathe.

HERB FACTS:
1. Lobelia -
Lobelia may help to treat a wide range of breathing problems, including asthma and COPD.  Lobelia acts as an expectorant to clear your lungs of mucus and congestion, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center.  Lobelia has been used in traditional medicine to treat asthma due to its anti-spasmodic and bronchodilating actions.  Lobelia is beneficial to dilate your airway passages and reduce bronchial spasms.

2. Mullein -
Mullein may have anti-inflammatory effects that can help in treating breathing problems.  Like lobelia, mullein can help to keep your lungs clear of mucus.  Mullein may help reduce airway inflammation and provide expectorant actions.

3. Elecampane -
The root of the elecampane plant helps kill harmful bacteria, lessens coughs, expels excess mucus, and helps alleviate stomach problems.  In the respiratory system, it gradually alleviates any fever that might be present while battling infection and maximizing excretion of toxins through perspiration.  If you have a tickling cough or bronchitis, elecampane may be able to help.  It is often helpful with emphysema, asthma, bronchial asthma, and tuberculosis.

4. Horehound -
Horehound relax the muscles of the lungs while encouraging the clearing of excess mucus.  Due to its antispasmodic properties, it is also good for bronchial spasms and coughs.  Horehound combines well with mullein and lobelia to effectively clear the lungs.
